Anyone who has used city public transportation in their life (especially in the summer) knows it can be painful. Excruciating heat, crowds, sweat and nowhere to move. To think this type of situation would ever prove to be beneficial seems impossible! However, it just happens to turn out this way for the metro system in Paris.
By 2011, a public social housing project will actually be heated by metro body heat! The building is connected to the metro system by a staircase and this new technology will cut the projects carbon dioxide emissions by a third.
Experts stayed, "The calories emitted by passengers, around 100 watts per person, combined with the heat from trains moving along tracks and the underground location of the metro mean that corridor temperatures are 14-20 degrees Celsius all year around."
